The number of small business owners serving as suppliers to Uncle Sam is up according to the newest numbers. Small firms won a record $93.3 billion in federal prime contracts in fiscal 2008, up $10 billion from fiscal 2007, but short of government goals.
The figure represents 21.5 percent of all government contracting, missing the 23 percent goal as mandated by Congress. Small businesses won 22 percent of federal contracts in fiscal 2007.
Only one government agency, GSA, met or exceeded goals in all five areas used to measure small business contracting.
Most agencies met goals in at least some of the business categories. Two agencies, OPM and USAID, met none of the five goals.
